Cat Haven Waiving Adoption Fees on Adult Cats 12 months and above in a Desperate Attempt to Ease Stray Cat Surge
Cat Haven is having a massive adoption drive and is waiving adoption fees on all its adult cats (12 months and up), starting this Saturday 29 March until 6 April (or until all cats are rehomed), in conjunction with World Stray Day and in a bid to ease the pressure of too many stray cats in the shelter.
Cat Haven is taking desperate measures as its shelter is nearly full, with cats stacked in dog crates instead of cat pens and an exhausted team of staff and volunteers.
Although the new Cat Law has had an initial positive effect, we have had a ‘third wave’ of cats surrendered in large numbers in the last couple of weeks due to the late kitten season, and we are in crisis. Staff are at breaking point as we have over 300 adult cats on grounds at the moment and over 100 cats out in temporary foster care. With it costing over $2500 per day to keep all these stray cats, we are left with no alternative than to waive adoption fees. With kittens still readily available and in demand, it is virtually impossible to rehome our older cats.
Cat Haven has taken the lead from a prominent animal welfare shelter in Victoria and other successful, leading animal welfare groups in the US whereby these shelters found no adverse outcomes from giving away their cats in desperate times and they collected a lot of money in donations and sponsorship during the adoption drive.
Chandra Woodley (Marketing officer) said ”Stringent adoption standards and screening will apply as always and Cat Haven will still have the right of refusal. Of course, all our cats comply with the new Cat Laws and come to you sterilised, microchipped and vaccinated, even if we are giving them away without fee, so there has never been a better time to adopt a cat!”
This coincides with World Stray Day on April 4th, which is a worldwide celebrated day to give special attention to the 600 million stray animals in the world. Stray animals lead poor and miserable lives on the streets, scavenging for food, suffering from extreme heat and often diseases. World Stray Day is the day to show compassion for stray cats in Western Australia.
