Ebola Viral Disease has rapidly become a great scourge for humanity. It is a relatively new virus that has crossed the species barrier from bats, having acquired enough genetic similarity to other animals to be compatible and cause disease in a variety of mammal species such as monkeys, humans, gazelle, and several other species. It is believed that bats are the vector for this malady and that they spread the virus to many other species through direct contact and through contact with their dung and urine.
Since the Ebola virus has become an active contagion in humans, hundreds of people have died in Central and Western Sub-Saharan Africa. Sadly, there is currently no known cure and the human suffering mounts day by day. There are few treatments in existence and the most that health care workers can do is to treat the symptoms of the disease. However, treating the symptoms does increase a person’s survival chances by, at least, 25% over those who do not receive medical care.
Those most affected and at risk are anyone who may come into contact with an infected person, whether they are displaying indications or not, and those who handle the remains of those have perished due to Ebola infection. Since Ebola is a bodily fluid borne virus, one must come into direct contact with an infected person or animal or come into contact with any bodily fluids that were generated by an infected individual or animal.
